Description

[Editor's note: the following translation by Chrystian Kretowicz of the Banderia Prutenorum manuscript is based on a translation from Latin into Old Polish, available at the Choragwie Pruskie cz. 1 - Jan Dlugosz webpage.]

13. Banner of the Bishop and Bishopric of Sambia, led by Heinrich, Count of Chemnitz in Meissen [Saxony]. Composed of vassal knights of the Bishop, members of the Bishopric Court and hired armored knights. Note: this Banner is 2 and 1/2 cubits long, 2 and 1/4 cubits wide. [Editor's note: about 125 cm × 112 cm.]
Chrystian Kretowicz, 2 June 2001

The original image shows the flag hanging vertically (hoist in the top of the picture) and a wodden pole is visible at the viewer's right hand (my image being thus a supposed backside); no finial; white sleeve. The flag design suggests this flag was supposed to be flown from a vertical pole.
António Martins, 28 February 2002

From the Teutonic Banners at Tannenberg webpage:
"Komturia of Ragnit. Two banners [military units of the Order] were fielded under this Standard. Dlugosz ascribes the two standards to the Bishoprics of Sambia and Ragnit. There is however an incons[iste]ncy here as the Sambia standard is recorded in other sources and does not match this one. Polish Historians believe that the borough fielded two banners, one of Komturia troops and the other of vassals and mercenaries of the Bishopric."
Santiago Dotor, 7 June 2005
